MAKING THE DREAM WORK

A story was told about this kid who’s not sure which team he belonged to—Team A or Team B. He was disconnected and influenced by his peers. Eventually, he became himself, unleashed that compassion in him and came out a leader.

“If I were to go back and check with the schoolteacher, she would probably say that he’s not good in school, but a project like this exposes a child and brings out the leadership that he has within,” Prem said.

With CORE 2015, the Project HOPE team wishes to inspire the youth, especially the adolescents to bring those core values back. “We use the wilderness to inspire action and bring about change in people’s characters,” he added.

With the dedication of the whole team, Project HOPE aspires to make the dream of every child, every mother, every volunteer work by guiding them to lead similar balanced lives.

Edward Oh, Prudential Welfare Home Supervisor, said, “This CORE activity was something new for my children. The children have not been outside for anything like this. This is their first time. They found it tiring, but they had fun. It’s good to have kids be familiar with things like this, so they can be independent and do much more things later on. Equip them so they can do whatever they want in the future.”

Prudential Welfare Home started in 1993, accommodating 25 kids in the shelter at the moment. For Edward, training a child on how to save a life is something that could be imparted with the kids, too.

Amina Ammar, a Danish intern for WAO, shared her CORE experience. “I’ve been here in Malaysia for three months now, spending time with the mothers and their kids. What struck me most was seeing how this one single mother was smiling all day. She was motivated. She pushed herself to her limits, and she’s been so thankful. She has a little daughter whom she couldn’t let go before, as she was just so attached to her. But today, the daughter was able to mix around with the other volunteers.”
