Butterworth, 21 July 2019 – With the aim of promoting Seberang Prai (Seberang Prai was originally named Province Wellesley after Richard Wellesley) into a coming avenue for sporting events on mainland Penang, the 2019 edition of Province Wellesley Run was called to an end.
This year marked the Province Wellesley Run’s third and final event in the series, completing the medals of north, central, and south Seberang Prai. In 2017, the event was hit by the catastrophic storm which left most parts of Penang inundated.
The storm wrecked the Province Wellesley Run preparations that were already in place in Padang Pemuda Merdeka and the organizers declared an emergency cancellation for safety reasons.
While hopes were shattered, the storm did not dampen the determination of the organizers, and like true sportsmen after a defeat, they returned to host it in 2018, and strived to do it better in 2019.
To date, RM60,000 have been raised from the three series of Province Wellesley Run, with RM24,000 raised in 2017, RM20,000 raised in 2018, and RM16,000 raised this year. The remarkable achievement was made possible thanks to the voluntary effort of the organizers to host the event without taking profit and those who participated and supported it.
The money raised has since been donated to Think City in their efforts to rejuvenate Butterworth town together with Seberang Prai Municipal Council, while the balance was donated to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society.
Flagged off t Padang Pemuda Merdeka, Butterworth, the event welcomed 2,000 participants, running in support of the same noble deed for a charitable cause and spending precious family time in a healthy activity.
The next tri-series of Province Wellesley Run will welcome participants in 2020, 2021, and 2022.
