The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be delayed about a year due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
Originally scheduled to begin on 24 July, the International Olympics Committee said the games will now take place “no later than summer 2021”.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he and the head of the International Olympic Committee agreed to delay the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo for about a year.
Canada and Australia became the first two countries who announced their decisions to withdraw from this summer’s Games.
The Summers Olympics have been canceled three times before — in 1916, 1940, and 1944 — and the Winter Games have been canceled twice, in 1940 and 1944, during the world wars.
