As we are slowly entering the endemic phase, the national recovery plan has begun to allow stores, gyms, restaurants, and other activities to open up for fully vaccinated individuals. Hence, despite being in a pandemic, we will soon have to learn to live with it together.
Moreso, we still have to be extra cautious and aware when we are outdoor exercising. Generally speaking, germs dissipate very quickly outdoors, but that doesn’t mean you can give up distancing and other Covid-19 prevention measures outdoors.
Now, when you’re out running, you’ll need to consider where and when to run amid the pandemic. So here’s what you need to know about running, walking, and exercising outdoors during a pandemic.
1.Distance yourself away from people more than 6 feet of space
Firstly, practicing safe social distance outdoors or giving people more than 6 feet of space is a step to prevent the spread of the virus.
It is more likely to spread when it’s in a closed environment, however it does not take into consideration the factors like wind or heavy breathing that could influence how far your respiratory droplets disperse. There’s been research suggesting that respiratory droplets from bikers and runners may spread up to 33 to 65 feet.
Many people overestimate the likelihood of someone being infected by the droplets. Thus, it is wise to maintain a longer distance when you’re outdoor walking or running. For instance, if you see a runner approaching you, give them away to pass you first.

2.Consider wearing a face mask even if it’s uncomfortable
While wearing a face mask can be uncomfortable when you’re sweating and breathing heavily on a run or walk, you should still consider wearing them to protect yourself and others as well as preventing the spread of infection.
When you decide to go for outdoor runs, try to avoid a busy street or trail at a busy time or running with a group of people. Also, avoid stopping and talking to other people you see on your run, as it is an added risk of exposure.
If you ever find your runs boring, consider playing your best running playlist or invite your running buddy to run virtually together. This way you may feel more accountable and it makes running more fun and challenging.
3.Check for official guidelines
As in some parks where there are higher cases of the virus, officials may temporarily close down parks to prevent further spread. So, before heading out for your outdoor activities, make sure to do some research and look out for closure and the cases around the area.
So go ahead, go for a run, visit that running trail you’ve been meaning to visit. Just remember, we’re still in the middle of a pandemic and you still need to practice good social distancing, even outside.
