Studies throughout the course of time have discussed the effectiveness of each, looking into the pros and cons, and in this article, we will look into the two allowing you to decide which is more suited for you.

Outside running:

1) Outside running burns more calories, and you may have experienced this, have you realized that running outside seems tougher at times? This can be attributed to the gradient changes and uneven surfaces which provide more resistance which in turn makes you work harder, resulting in more calories burnt.

2) Exposure to the sun and nature is one of the key benefits of running outside, studies have shown a direct correlation to emotional well-being whilst running outside, additionally getting in the vitamins from the sun allows compounding the benefits of running.

Treadmill running:

1) Bad weather, rain or shine, is one of the best reasons for treadmill running. It allows you to get in your runs consistently, whether the weather is bad or you simply don’t have the option to run outside. Additionally, it also allows you to monitor the time for your runs and the speed at that you run, which is great for progression decisions.

2) Easier on joints, many modern treadmills are equipped with cushioning which in turn helps with reducing the impact on the joints, this in theory will reduce injury, and overall be better for those with past or existing injuries. This will allow you to train in a more controlled setting whilst compounding the benefits of injury prevention.
