Being Malaysian pride and joy, we are always supportive when it comes to sports. For instance, the joy and tears shed for many of our well-known national athletes such as Dato Lee Chong Wei (Badminton) or Datuk Nicol Ann David (Squash).

So to all our enthusiastic runners in the Malaysian running community, let’s take a look at our national elite runners.

Here you can see how these amazing runners train and push themself to their limits to achieve their goals.

1.Sheela Samivellu, 41

First up, we have Sheela who holds the record for a national women’s half marathon (1 hour 24min 44 seconds) and is a perennial winner at the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered marathon.

Sheela has started running since 5 years old and hasn’t stopped. She finds joy and passion in running and wants to keep running forever. Shella mentioned that running has taught her discipline in life and her career as well as being a stress reliever which many runners can relate to.

Despite not having any running events due to the pandemic, Sheela continues to run. She runs a comfortable 10km distance about five days a week to keep her mentally and physically fit.

2.Soh Wai Ching, 27

Next, introducing you to Malaysia’s Guinness World Record holder for the Greatest Vertical Height Stair Climbing in one hour with a distance of 1.295km, Soh Wai Ching.

Achieving a world record is the ultimate dream for any athlete, and Soh hopes it will inspire others to be creative and think out of the box during the pandemic.

Soh was introduced to running in 2012 and has been stuck to it. Now, he runs on the road about four to five times a week and runs stairs four to five times a week.

It clearly shows, Soh’s hard work has definitely paid off.

3.Muhaizar Mohamad, 36

One of our country’s fastest marathon runners is Muhaizar Mohamad, a SEA Games marathon bronze medalist, and perennial KLSCM marathon winner.

Muhaizar is a father of four and a staff sergeant with the Malaysian armed forces and still makes time for his training. Despite being in the pandemic, Muhaizar continues training to maintain his stamina and performance. He currently competes in virtual runs.

He is truly an inspiration.

4.Royson Vincent, 25

Royson Vincent, a SEA Games 2017 800-meter bronze medalist, debuted by setting his new personal best time of 1:50:76. Then, placing first in the Malaysian Closed Athletics Championship 2019, by closing his official position as the fastest 800-meter runner in the region with a new personal best time of 1:50:56.

With the pandemic crippling all sports activities locally and internationally, Royson hopes to improve his personal best and gauge his performance at this stage.

5. Loh Chooi Fern, 29

Lastly, we have Loh Chooi Fern, the 2nd fastest Malaysian in the Women’s Full Marathon category.

She has been a regular competitor and winner in Malaysian races such as Penang Bridge Marathon, Standard Chartered KL Marathon, and Perlis Marathon.

Chooi Fern’s hard work is admirable. As she currently holds a full-time job as a Tax Consultant at Crowe Malaysia and is still able to achieve many running awards such as her personal best timing of 2h58min at the Gold Coast Marathon in 2019.
