When planning for a race, the last thing you want is a change of plans that ends up resulting in you not being able to race as there are programs and training set up to prepare appropriately prior. All that hard work put in, all to waste, and that is the self-destructing rut that you may experience.

Injury, illness, and even extreme weather are some of the main reasons for cancelling a run, and handling both the emotional and physical challenges will play a toll on you. Sometimes that rut may even affect your mental state which will undoubtedly affect your performance of your runs.

Missing a race doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world, here are some of our tips on what to do when you can’t race:

1) Accepting the reality – Without a doubt missing a race can be frustrating, saddening and grief may set in. And we’re here to tell you it’s perfectly fine, but the sooner you come to terms with it, and create a new plan will leave you hungry for the next challenge ahead.

2) Breaking down the situation – Once you have come to terms, start to understand the nature of the cancellation, if it was due to an unforeseen injury, consulting a doctor to devise an intensive rehab plan to get you back is of priority.

3) Make alternative plans – If the reason for cancellation is because of external reasons, start planning alternatives to the race that aren’t too far out and will allow you to put yourself to the test. Even looking at taking a week’s break and regrouping is a plan on its own.

4) Adopting a positive mindset – Though easier said than done, you must train your mind to look at the positives of a situation, so that there is always a progressive and healthy approach to training, as it will make it bulletproof in the long run.

Just like everything in life, there are situations and outcomes that we simply can’t foresee and when it comes to running and training for a race it’s no different. So instead, simply take it with a pinch of salt and move on to the next game plan that allows for you to be back on track and closer to smashing that race that you have worked so hard for. As they say, just roll with the punches.
