The apple doesn’t fall far away from the tree as Eryn, the twenty-two year old elder sister, favorite hobbies are running and sports. It came to no surprise as this blossoming young lady was the netball representative for her state. Blessed with brains and brawn, she has just one more semester before graduating with a degree in
Science Administrative. How does she juggle her running and her studies?
Her routine begins with lectures in the morning, so her running would be in the afternoon. Even though her classes tend to finish late, she would train at night. Every day without fail, she would train religiously dedicating at least 45 minutes of running, even if she has to run alone at night. At times she would often go running with her very own group, the “Waghi runners”. Interestingly “Waghi” is defined as a family of runners. “If you want to run fast, you run with men”, Eryn quipped. When Eryn would feel slightly worn out, her “Waghi” runner group would constantly cheer “be stronger, be faster and if you want to win, you have to be strong, challenge your mental strength”. These are the very words that boost her to keep on running even if her legs are aching. This 22 year old revealed a secret to us that if she doesn’t follow her Waghi runners, she would have to resort to training at night in which she would be all alone and she would be scared. The two sisters grinned at each other when Eryn confided in us that her dream was to beat her amazingly fast younger sister one day.
Along with her elder sister, they both participated in their first race which was the Sports TOTO-FTKLAA Cross Country in the year 2015 and they both landed in the seventieth place with dissatisfaction brewing in their hearts. But one has got to learn how to lose before one wins so their mother told both of them that they would have to buckle up and do something so that at the next race, they would arrive at the finishing line victorious. From then on, they vowed to train. The very next race they participated was the AmBank KL City Day Run in which they respectively landed in the fortieth place. Following those races, it was nothing but victory as the girls started clenching the top three places.
…THEIR MOTHER WAS their backbone and the fuel to their spirit.
Every runner has some form of support. For these two, it would be none other than their mother. Their mother was just more than a supporter; she’s their backbone and the fuel to their spirit. We soon discovered where their athletic genes originated from. This superhero of a mother was actually an ex-football player, representing the state of Perak! Now we know that legs of steel runs through the family. A slight chuckle passed through the lips of Eryn as she mentioned how if the race had a spot for veteran women, they would immediately register her mother in.
