Training to defeat the Beast
There was a reason why the obstacle race was called the Beast. The Spartan Beast was no easy feat; it was not for the light of heart. It would be no ordinary obstacle race. Runners would have to prepare themselves for the thin air as heights would reach up to 9,000 feet of elevation with 30+ over obstacles. To prepare himself for the Spartan Race World Championships, he did a lot of research. He found out that there was to be a water obstacle and he did not know how to swim. For some people, learning something new is boring and tiring but to CK, he was thrilled! For him it was time for him to learn something new again and in the end he learnt how to swim. Every day without fail, he would check the weather forecast. To his running partner and his amazement, the day of the race would be either snowing or raining! Even though they had a couple of days to rest before the race, they would head to the gym feeling pumped up after witnessing other participants training intensely.
…he was thrilled! For him it was time for him to learn something new again and in the end he learnt how to swim.
The Day before…
On the first day of being there, they surveyed the obstacles and panicked when the forecast predicted that on the race day, it would either rain or snow! Experience in running in cold temperatures? The coldest temperature CK ever ran would have to be above 10 degree Celsius but as forecasted the highest temperature during the race would be six degree Celsius. The team soon discovered the true challenge was not the low temperature but the strong, harsh wind. There was never a second where the wind mellowed down. They had to prepare themselves on the kind of clothing to wear and how many layers would be sufficient.
Facing the Beast
Lady luck was on their side! There was actually a swim across the lake challenge which had to be cancelled because the temperature had dropped all the way to a negative 4 degree Celsius. To their dismay they would still have to get soaked in the later obstacles.
There’s a reason why it’s called the Spartan race. This was no laughing matter as within the first kilometer during the second obstacle, CK and his teammate would have to get into the cold water. Half of his body soaked wet accompanied by the harsh wind was no easy feat. He comically added on that if one refused to enter the water, he would have to do 100 burpees as a penalty and still enter the freezing water.
