Not too long ago, hip-hop music was popular in Malaysia. Teenagers are seen performing myriad of hip-hop disciplines, rapping and dancing to the beat! At that time, every teenager was proud to have his or her own clan. If you head to Plaza Bukit Bintang during any weekend, walls are filled to the brim with graffiti, signifying their territorial marks. That’s how I found the understanding of a “crew”.
Fast forward to 2012, the trend has changed from music to fitness. Every time there is a running event, slots are taken up like hot cakes! Things have also evolved as you can witness the camaraderie between teammates as they proudly wear the crew shirt and cheered their lungs out during running events.
Prior to that, running events were very limited. Until today, the experience from my first event stays fresh in my mind; it was the PJ Half Marathon where I took part in the 10km category. Medals were only given to the first 200 finishers and of course, I didn’t get it. It was such a slap in my face and it is also something that I took as a learning curve. It made me try harder to earn my medal!
I was in my early 20’s when it hit me that I was obese and had gained a whopping 30kg since I left high school (definitely blaming it on the Nasi Lemak Ayam binge). In school, it was compulsory for us to join all these curriculum activities. Being a former middle distance runner, I was very active and fit.
7 Years Flew By And Here’s Why I’m Still Running – “The Strength Of Each Member Is The Team”
However, it was such a massive transition from high school to university where all I did was eat and sleep (This was on repeat!).

I told myself I need to lose the extra weight. I decided to take up running to achieve my weight goal. I started jogging around my neighborhood but I knew there was not much improvement. I was not motivated, I had no training partner and most importantly no one is there to guide me. Therefore, I joined more events to meet more running friends and somehow it led me to getting a fitness center membership.
