Have you ever heard of a running streak? Well, a running streak is when you run every single day. Runners who hold a run streak are called ‘Run Streakers’ and they are becoming a part of a growing community that inspires other runners on the block to join.

You must be wondering, is it even possible to run every day? Well yes, it is, studies do show that doing some moderate exercise every day is beneficial for your overall health. However, running every day can be dangerous when the degree of overload is too high. That means reducing either the intensity, time, or type of runs. Pounding the pavement every day may lead to an increased risk of leg injuries.

Regardless, as we all head into a new season and new year feeling enthusiastic about running, try joining the trend of running streaks to keep yourself motivated and accountable throughout the season.

So here are some tips for a successful running streak;

1. Set challenging yet achievable goals

When you set goals, make sure the challenge motivates you and is achievable, assess your current level of fitness so you don’t aim too high. For instance, if you are currently running 1-2 times a week, try to gradually build up to 3-4 days before commencing your streak challenge.

If you are deciding the length of your run streak, then start with the aim to run every day for a week and progress from there.

2. Take control of your schedule

Find ways to work out how you can fit the miles or minutes in around your work, family, friends, and own free time. As your schedule ramps up, add a workout to your calendar and consider them as meetings you can’t miss.

3. Nutrition

The more miles and days you run, you will in turn be burning more calories. Try consuming more protein, fruits, and vegetables to replenish what your body has lost. Hydration is equally important, drink regularly and keep on top of your electrolytes when you’re running streaks.

4. Don’t dismiss shorter distances

If you’re a busy person, have 10 minutes to spare? That could be enough time to run your fastest mile and for you to head to the showers.

Commit to logging just one mile a day to make running a real, non-negotiable part of your daily task. To keep you accountable, try using running apps such as Strava or RunKeeper to keep track of your progress.

5. Embrace different types of runs

As we live in a tropical country with an all-year-round sunny and rainy season, we will need to learn to embrace and adapt to the different types of conditions and runs.

Sometimes running means logging 10km in your favourite trail on a beautiful cooling day, then head to Sunday brunch with your friends. But other times, it could mean dashing out the door to log a quick run before it rains.

Besides that, if you can run on trails regularly it is a good idea to do most of your runs off the road because it’s less stressful on your legs. But if you can’t hit the trails, you can consider running on a treadmill or hitting your nearest track for a session.
