Tales Of The Young One
The young Ruben, who came from parents of Spanish and Mexican origin, was very active in sports. His PE teacher and school’s athletic coach even want to recruit him to be part of a sports league. Growing up with an older generation, Ruben has the routine of “Get up early, work hard, then repeat”. No time for after-school sports. “My grandma doesn’t want to pick me up after school. Because she thought that after-school sports are a luxury, she wanted me to go home and do chores instead” Ruben said while chuckling. He was living with his grandparents who raised him in a kind of household that if he wants something, he needs to earn it. No one will give him anything.
“That actually boost the values I am living today. I realized that if you want to be successful, you need to treat people with respect. My grandparents are a good driver for moral, values and principles” Ruben added. Nevertheless, his love for sports is within him as it cannot be suppressed. When he got a little older, Ruben eventually pursues it. He started with strength training and later on got enlisted in Marine Corps.
At 16, he became a father. He was very young back then. He didn’t know what to do and how to take good care of the baby. In order to provide the basic necessities for his kid, he decided to join the US Marine Corps and got dispatched to Okinawa, Japan. Being in the Marine Corps for four years taught him so many things that shaped him a strong foundation in life.
